American Diabetes Association to Highlight Diabetes Impact on Business; Organization's CEO Will Paint Stark Picture, Offer Help
Posted on: Tuesday, 21 February 2006, 09:01 CST
News Advisory:
On Wednesday, February 22, 2006, Lynn Nicholas, Chief Executive Officer of the American Diabetes Association, will challenge local corporate CEOs and executives to use their leadership to combat diabetes among their employees. The event will take place from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the National Press Club.
Diabetes threatens to cripple the US economy through increased medical costs and a drop in worker productivity. In fact, companies with 500 employees spend $500,000 each year on diabetes-related costs. As the number of employees increases, so does the cost of diabetes to that company.
Fortunately, the American Diabetes Association's newly-launched Corporate Health Ambassador Initiative is designed to enable companies to fight back. This local and national initiative provides area businesses with the tools they need to promote healthier lifestyles among their employees to help stem the diabetes epidemic.
Other speakers at the Address to the Business Community will be:
-- Sally Duran, senior vice president, Quality Improvement, United Healthcare DC Region, who will discuss how diabetes impacts a corporation's bottom line; and
-- Michael Mawby, chief government affairs officer, Novo Nordisk, Inc., who will talk about how efforts in Congress and the White House will further impact progress in preventing diabetes.
Almost 21 million Americans -- including 423,000 individuals in the Washington, D.C., market -- have diabetes. Nearly one-third of these individuals do not know they have the disease. An additional 41 million Americans have pre-diabetes and medical professionals across the country are noting a significant increase in children and young adults with type 2 diabetes.
