Cardiology of Tulsa has been selected as a finalist for two awards presented by the Microsoft Healthcare Users Group as part of the 2006 MS-HUG Annual Awards.

The practice was named a finalist in the Clinic of the Year category for its use of technology to address quality improvement, clinical efficiency, reduction in cost and creation of computable data.

In the Clinician of the Year category, Michael Spain was recognized as a finalist for his efforts in promoting digital environments.

The awards were presented during a ceremony conducted in connection with the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society conference in San Diego.

The MS-HUG Annual Awards recognize contributions being made by health-care organizations and individuals to increase efficiency.

Dr. Spain and Cardiology of Tulsa are helping lead the way to a more connected healthcare community, said Steve Shihadeh, general manager, Microsoft Healthcare and Life Sciences. By informing and connecting physicians through the use of electronic medical records, they are able to provide a more efficient and patient-friendly healthcare experience.

Since implementing an electronic medical records system from Horsham, Pa.-based NextGen Healthcare Information Systems in January 2001, Cardiology of Tulsa has experienced financial and operational improvements.

Being recognized by an organization like MS-HUG is a tremendous honor, said Nancy Nelson, chief administrative officer for Cardiology of Tulsa. What makes this recognition even more rewarding is that we persevered through our early struggles with technology and, today, are realizing the fruits of our labor.

Spain has been with Cardiology of Tulsa since 1988 and serves as the practice's technology leader.

Established in 1969, the practice has five offices in three cities, serving patients throughout northeastern Oklahoma. Sixteen full-time cardiologists see 20,000 patients annually.
