Caring Today Magazine Supports Johnson & Johnson's Caregiver Initiative

Caring Today, the premier magazine for family caregivers will lend support and editorial content to The Caregiver Initiative, a public-awareness campaign announced today by Johnson & Johnson Consumer Products Company, joined by the United States Surgeon General, Vice Admiral Richard H. Carmona, M.D., M.P.H.
With more than 50 million family caregivers in the United States, and 75 million expected by 2007, nearly one out of every four adults will provide care to an aging or ill relative. The Caregiver Initiative is designed to call attention to the vital role of the family caregiver - helping them maintain their own health and wellbeing as they care for others. Moreover, the initiative helps raise public-awareness around the health, family, financial, legal and medical matters Americans must prepare for as the population ages and more adults are tasked with caring for a family member.
In a survey released today by The Caring Initiative, 22 percent of the population currently provides unpaid care to an adult relative or friend - more services in the home, free of charge, than the federal government provides in all settings combined - making the family caregiver a critical component to the country's healthcare system. With projections that 20 percent of the U.S. population will be 65-years old or older by 2030, and an estimated 80 percent of all long-term care services being provided by a family member, caregiving will be an unavoidable responsibility for most families. Caring Today magazine, its online counterpart CaringToday.com, and The Caring Initiative offer families a safe haven for support, sound advice and inspiration.
"We are pleased to provide ongoing support to The Caring Initiative and its complimentary mission of arming family caregivers with current and reliable information that will enable them to provide quality care to their loved ones and lead a balanced life for themselves," said Virginia Cargill, founding editor of Caring Today. "We applaud Johnson & Johnson for its vision, devotion and initiative to bring this issue to the forefront of public discussion and awareness."
Founded in 2004, Caring Today has grown to become an authoritative source of information for more than 500,000 family caregivers. Written by medical and industry experts, the bi-monthly publication and CaringToday.com Web site helps family caregivers weed through medical, legal and social issues affecting aging or senior citizens. As a friend of The Caring Initiative, Caring Today will contribute editorial content to www.strengthforcaring.com, a comprehensive online resource and virtual community for family caregivers that combines original content with the best of caregiving resources available today.
