DESPITE removing 129 wombs over a 25-year period Neary’s failings were only highlighted by two midwives in 1998.

Incredibly, a probe by the Institute Of Obstetricians And Gynaecologists in Ireland concluded he had no case to answer.

It is believed it was impossible to find another Irish doctor to speak out against him and it was only after an inquiry by a Manchester consultant found he was putting women at risk that he was suspended.

Judge Harding Clark’s report revealed Neary’s colleague Dr Finian Lynch was also investigated for carrying out a significant number of hysterectomies – 40 over 16 years. But no malpractice was found.

Shockingly the report reveals that a woman died in childbirth at the Lourdes Hospital but staff would not discuss it.

It also noted the hospital was run by the Medical Missionaries of Mary which was accountable to a religious community and not clinical standards.

And it disclosed that a woman who was due to have a minor procedure had her uterus and ovaries removed after Neary claimed she had cancer.
