Mar. 1--Two OWC Collegiate High School students were among the 14 senior division winners in their respective categories at the 29th East Panhandle Regional Science and Engineering Fair. Justin Townley of Crestview won first place in the Botany category and was also named one of four Senior Grand Prize winners who will advance to the Intel International Science Fair May 7 to 13 in Indianapolis, Ind. This is the third time that Townley has advanced to the International competition.
Adare Morell of Niceville won first place in the Medicine and Health category and was named as the first alternate to the International Science Fair.
Townley's project deals with using natural antioxidants to decrease free radicals in order to increase crop yields. The project not only found a way to increase the shelf life of fruit significantly, it also provides a mechanism for a first line of defense against severe environmental stresses such as hurricanes or droughts.
Townley's project was titled "Free Radical Inhibition and Alleviation by Antioxidants to Prevent Agricultural Devastation from Unfavorable Environmental Conditions with Lycopersicon esculentum -- an Economic Impact".
Both Townley and Morell also received numerous cash, scholarship and other awards from various businesses and community groups in recognition of their placement at the competition.
