Former Senator John Breaux Probes Health Care Reform With Senators Gordon Smith and Blanche Lincoln

Posted on: Thursday, 2 March 2006, 12:00 CST

WASHINGTON, March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Former Louisiana Senator John Breaux held his first 2006 Ceasefire on Health Care event today, moderating a discussion with Senators Gordon Smith (R-OR) and Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) on the top health care reform issues and health care priorities of the 109th Congress. During the forum, the participants exchanged ideas about the effect of the uninsured on small businesses, health information technology, long term care for the elderly and Medicaid and SCHIP (State Children's Health Insurance Program) reauthorization.

"Senators Smith and Lincoln are among two of the most well-respected and knowledgeable politicians on health care issues and I am very pleased to have them join my Ceasefire on Health Care campaign," said Senator Breaux. "Their participation demonstrates their dedication to putting aside party differences and focusing on bipartisan solutions to the problems facing our country."

"Decreasing the ranks of the uninsured and addressing new realities facing our health care system has long been a priority of mine," said Senator Smith. "The fact is, however, that we will achieve nothing unless both parties work together. Affordable health care must be a bipartisan objective, and I'm looking forward to participating in this discussion."

"Health care is an issue that concerns everyone. We must shore up and protect programs like Medicaid, SCHIP, and Medicare as well as fund new initiatives to help small businesses purchase affordable private coverage," said Senator Lincoln. "I am very pleased to be working with Senator Breaux on his bipartisan reform efforts."

Today's event was held in conjunction with the CHRISTUS Health & Dubuis Health System's Advocacy Education Forum, providing an opportunity for these leading policymakers to exchange ideas and identify areas of common ground.

Senator Breaux is opening the second year of his national Ceasefire on Health Care campaign, which has convened leading policymakers and health care advocates to find common ground to move forward with health care reform.

Previous Ceasefire bipartisan forums have featured Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich; Congressmen Robert Menendez (D- NJ) and Joe Schwarz (R-MI); Senator Johnny Isakson (R-GA) and Congressman David Scott (D-GA 13th); Republican pollster Bill McInturff and Democratic pollster Geoff Garin; and Brookings Institution scholar, Henry J. Aaron, Ph. D., and Heritage Foundation scholar Stuart M. Butler, Ph. D.

The Ceasefire on Health Care series is made possible by a grant from Pfizer Inc.
