Nation's Mental Health Care: a System In Shambles
Posted on: Thursday, 2 March 2006, 18:00 CST
NEW YORK, March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- THIS IS A MULTIVU SPECIAL REPORT. THE NATIONAL ALLIANCE ON MENTAL ILLNESS - OR NAMI - HAS JUST RELEASED A REPORT CARD ON THE NATION'S MENTAL HEALTH CARE SYSTEM. THE NATIONAL AVERAGE GRADE is a "D," WITH NINE STATES RECEIVING AN "F," IN WHAT PRESIDENT BUSH HAS CALLED "A SYSTEM IN SHAMBLES." THESE RESULTS ARE ALARMING AS MENTAL ILLNESSES CAUSE MORE DISABILITY THAN ANY OTHER CLASS OF MEDICAL ILLNESS IN AMERICA.
THE REPORT CARD WAS BASED ON A COMPREHENSIVE SURVEY - THE FIRST OF ITS KIND IN 15 YEARS.
ACTRESS PATTY DUKE IS SPEAKING OUT ON HER EXPERIENCE WITH MENTAL ILLNESS AND THE CURRENT MENTAL HEALTH CARE SYSTEM:
"As a person with bipolar disorder this report says to me, Okay, you got medication, you got therapy, now you must turn around and make sure that others get the same change. This I believe is at the core of many of our national problems, and it's fixable, there just needs to be new energy and new direction."
