Pam Paulsen, M.D., F.A.C.C. is an Interventional Cardiologist with Cardiovascular Consultants and Medical Director of the North Memorial Women’s Heart Clinic
Pamela R. Paulsen, M.D. will be focusing her presentation on risk factors for heart disease in women – what’s old, what’s new and where research and progress in cardiovascular medicine are headed. She will review the warning signs and symptoms of heart disease and what women can do personally to lower their risk of heart disease – not only for themselves but for their whole family. Recent landmark studies conducted around the world have identified nine factors that you can change to lower your risk These nine factors account for about 80-90% of heart disease in the world. This engaging presentation will help women calculate their personal risk and outline a strategy to improve their heart health.

June LaValleur, M.D., F.A.C.O.G. is an Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women’s Health at the University of Minnesota Medical School June LaValleur, M.D. will present an informative discussion on menopause, a normal event in a woman’s life which can be totally symptom free or full of very bothersome symptoms. She will discuss the recent studies that have changed the way we look at hormone therapy, and will give information that is necessary to help women make assessments about management of this time in their lives, whether they use hormone therapy, alternative therapies, or just make changes in lifestyle. Midlife is an excellent time to reassess our health and health habits. This nationally acclaimed speaker will cover what a woman needs to do for health care maintenance while also briefly covering sexual function changes at this time.

Pat Culliton, M.A., L.Ac, will help you sort out fact from fiction in the complex field of alternative medicine and women’s health, Sorting through the myriad of information about complementary and alternative medicine on the internet, television, and in print media can be daunting. If it’s natural, does that mean it’s safe? If your doctor doesn’t believe in alternative treatments, does that mean you shouldn’t try them? Can one combine alternative and conventional medicine treatments? Pat will focus on topics that concern women most including sleeplessness, menopause and hormone replacement, stress, memory, energy and depression.
* Women’s Cancer – Are We Winning the Battle?
Amy Spomer, M.D. is an Oncologist with Park Nicollet Cancer Center
Amy Spomer, M.D. will be speaking on risk factors for cervical cancer, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, skin cancer, colon cancer and briefly on lung cancer. She will also touch on important ways to modify one’s risk for these diseases. Our speaker will lastly, review ways to deal with a diagnosis of cancer if it happens as well, mostly psychosocial, not on treatment modalities.

Judy Mahle Lutter gives an inspiring presentation to put you on the road to responsible exercise. And for good reason. Physical activity can reduce many of the health problems related to women today, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and osteoporosis. By being active you can prevent disease, build endurance, and make yourself stronger and more flexible. An additional benefit is that physical activity can improve your mood, reduce stress and improve your body image.

* “Diet” is a Four-Letter Word
Craig Bowron, M.D. is a partner in Abbott Northwestern Hospitalists Service and Minnesota Monthly’s medical columnist
Craig Bowron, M.D. will chronicle the demise of the American diet and the rise of processed foods. He’ll touch on the Chet Atkins Diet and its cronies, and explain why good diets aren’t really diets. (An alcoholic can’t wean himself off beer, then say “There, I’m cured!” and go back to drinking.) He’ll discuss the nutri-buzzword “glycemic index,” show how the Low-Fat Craze made us fatter than ever, and explain why the phrase “healthy fats” is not an oxymoron. He’ll rail against trans fatty acids, the evil twin of saturated fats, and close with a look at our increasing understanding of the health sustaining effects of good food.
