Vaccine to Protect Against Ear Infections

Posted on: Friday, 3 March 2006, 21:00 CST

Czech scientists have developed a vaccine that could help prevent ear infections in children that can be painful, but rarely causes long-term damage.

Dr. Roman Prymula of the University of Defense at Hradec Kralove had 5,000 infants given the ear vaccine, a hepatitis A vaccine, at various ages between 3 months and 15 months, the BBC reported Friday.

The researchers found 333 of the children given the new vaccine had a middle ear infection, compared with 499 in the control group.

We found a reduction in ear, nose and throat specialist-confirmed episodes of acute otitis media by about a third in infants in the vaccine group compared with controls, said Prymula.

The vaccine was found effective against the streptococcus pneumonia and haemophilus influenza, the study published in the Lancet reported.

However, some physicians are critical of using a vaccine on children for something that is not life threatening.
