Court Puts Off Order on Amputee Sex Offender

Posted on: Saturday, 4 March 2006, 15:00 CST

A REQUEST for an extended supervision order on a sex offender who had his legs amputated in prison has been put off so a court can get more information about his condition.

The Corrections Department is seeking the order against Pusa Finau, 57, a former caregiver at a Porirua mental health care home, who in January 2001 was jailed for 4 1/2 years on six charges of sexual offending. The victim was an 11-year-old girl.

He also has convictions for manslaughter, assault with a hammer and throwing petrol over his ex-wife.

Wellington District Court was due to hear the application earlier this month. However, department lawyer Mark Anderson agreed it could not be heard without Finau being present. He asked Judge Bridget Mackintosh to defer the application so his condition could be assessed.

Finau's lawyer Robert Lithgow said his client had been bedridden for the last year and under 24-hour care. Mr Lithgow doubted there would be any benefit in court-ordered supervision.

Judge Mackintosh adjourned the hearing till March 21 so Mr Lithgow could lodge documents outlining Finau's condition.
