A patient jumped to his death from the sixth floor of a hospital.

The 34-year-old man, whose name has not yet been released, used his drip stand to break a window at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital, stood on a chair and jumped out.

Hospital bosses and police said it happened at 9pm on Tuesday, but that they were not in a position to name the man until all relatives had been informed.

A Newcastle Hospitals NHS Trust spokeswoman said yesterday: “A 34- year-old man, who was a patient, used an infusion pump and stand to break the glass of a sixth-floor window and then, after standing on a chair, jumped through the broken window, falling to his death.

“We are collaborating with both the police and the coroner.”

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: “He died a short time later. His death is not being treated as suspicious.”

The coroner has been informed and an inquest is expected to be opened today.
