Groups to start campaign against HIV in girls, women

To combat rising HIV infection rates among women and girls, the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals Office of Public Health Family Planning Programs Adolescent Health Initiative and the New Orleans AIDS Taskforce have partnered to focus on prevention efforts, a news release says.

The following events are planned for this weekend:

Friday

BATON ROUGE: 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. The Baton Rouge AIDS Society will host a female-only Greek step show at the Louisiana State Troopers Training Academy at Independence Park and feature HIV health- education speakers and resource materials.

NEW ORLEANS: 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day Kickoff at City Hall will feature motivational speakers, entertainment, food and prizes. The NOAIDS Taskforce, through its mobile testing unit, will provide free HIV testing.

Saturday

NEW ORLEANS: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. DHHs Office of Public Health will hold a training course for volunteers who want to become health educators at the NOAIDS Office, 2601 Tulane Ave., Suite 500.

Sunday

GRETNA: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A health-education/awareness event will take place at Boynton United Methodist Church, 515 Lafayette St.
