Resolvin E1 Protects Against Gum Disease

Researchers introduced a new anti-inflammatory drug at the 35th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental Research at Disney World in Orlando.
Gum disease is normally initiated by bacteria populating dental plaque and may eventually result in tissue and tooth loss. Until now, the prevention of gum disease has been limited to successful oral hygiene and regular professional care.
Resolvin E1 (RvE1) has shown to be successful in regulating tissue destruction and resolving inflammation in gum disease, according to research by H. Hasturk, A. Kantarci, N. Ebrahimi, N. Petasis, C.N. Serhan, and T.E. Van Dyke, Goldman School of Dental Medicine, Department of Periodontology and Oral Biology at Boston University.
The results of the study showed that topical application of Resolvin provided remarkable protection against soft tissue and bone loss associated with gum disease.
