Two New Low-Cost Medicare Supplement Options Help Illinois Seniors Pay For Health Care
Posted on: Monday, 13 March 2006, 09:00 CST
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL) announced the availability of two new low-cost, cost-sharing Medicare Supplement plans for Illinois seniors, Plans K and L, which are ideal for individuals seeking assistance with the portion of doctor and hospital bills which Medicare does not cover. Enrollment for Plans K and L began the first of this year.
BCBSIL first began offering Medicare Supplement insurance plans in 1992 and is now offering Plans K and L as options for seniors seeking lower premiums for their supplemental insurance. These cost-sharing plans provide coverage comparable to other Medicare Supplement products but have lower monthly premiums in exchange for higher cost-sharing by the member. Monthly premiums are as low as $63 for Plan K and $87 for Plan L.
Members with Plan K pay half of the cost-sharing for covered services such as the first-day deductible for hospital care and skilled nursing facility care co-payments for days 21 through 100. Members with Plan L pay 25 percent for these services.
Once members reach an out-of-pocket limit of $4,000 for Plan K or $2,000 for Plan L, 100 percent of their Medicare co-payments and coinsurances are covered for the rest of the calendar year.
"Customer service, price and added features all play an important role in differentiating the Medicare Supplement plans offered by health insurers," said Peter Rodes, vice president, Consumer Markets, BCBSIL. "These attributes ensure that beneficiaries receive the maximum value from their health care coverage. In Illinois, more than 300,000 Medicare Supplement members age sixty-five and over trust Blue Cross and Blue Shield to provide affordable health care products and reliable service."
Illinois residents age 65 and over who are covered by Medicare Parts A and B are eligible for these guaranteed issue plans with guaranteed renewals, regardless of health status. BCBSIL members have the freedom of choosing their own doctors and specialists and can participate in the Members First(R)' program to receive added savings on prescriptions, dental, vision, diabetes testing supplies, hearing and chiropractic services, and more. Additionally, beneficiaries who choose the Med-Select option with Plan K or L will receive the same coverage for a lower monthly premium in exchange for using a Med-Select contracting hospital for all non-emergency admissions.
