Randolph Hospital Plans to Build a 40,000-Square-Foot Outpatient Center

Mar. 13--ASHEBORO -- Getting health care outside of the hospital is about to get easier in Randolph County.

Randolph Hospital is planning to build a 40,000-square-foot Outpatient Center by 2008.

The hospital recently received the go-ahead from the state to build the $16 million addition, which will be adjacent to the existing hospital.

"When a hospital plans to spend more than $2 million, you have to ask the state for permission," said April Thornton, public relations officer for the hospital. "They review your plans to make sure there's truly a need in the area."

The hospital board filed the application with the state in September and received permission in late February to build the addition. The new building will join at the hospital's north side and connect to the same floor where several other outpatient services, including physical therapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy and cardiopulmonary, currently reside.

Each service will have a separate registration and waiting room, and a new parking lot will be built.

Early plans call for Randolph Hospital to break ground on the Outpatient Center in December 2006.

"We think construction will take about 15 months, so we're expecting to be in the new building by April 2008," Thornton said.

Randolph Hospital is a private, not-for-profit organization.
