Singapore urges parents to vaccinate their children against MMR
SINGAPORE, March 13 (Xinhua) -- All parents in Singapore are urged to have their children vaccinated against measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), Channel NewsAsia report quoted the Ministry of Health (MOH) as saying on Monday.
The MOH warned that a lower-than-95-percent vaccination rate could lead to a possible outbreak of measles, a childhood disease with a death rate of 3 per thousand.
It had been reported that a small but increasing number of parents in the city state chose not to vaccinate their children because of either fear for autism caused by MMR vaccine or worries about their children's immature immune system when encountering viruses in the vaccine.
The MOH said that the purpose of the immunization is to protect children and there has been no scientific proof of possible links between MMR vaccine and autism. One in a million children might get vaccine damage by the MMR jab, according to statistics.
A total of 33 measles cases were reported in Singapore last year, as compared with more than 2,000 cases recorded in 1985 when the measles vaccination had not been made compulsory, the ministry said.
