Drug Trial Patient Reported in Coma

Posted on: Friday, 17 March 2006, 12:00 CST

One of six patients who fell ill during a British drug trial reportedly has gone into a coma, while four others showed signs of improvement.

The sixth patient was reported in critical condition at the London hospital.

The trial was for a drug meant to treat inflammatory reactions in leukemia, multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis, reports The Telegraph.

The doctor treating the six men said it was not clear what set off the reaction making them seriously ill.

The chief scientific officer of the German manufacturer of the drug said it had been tested on rabbits and monkeys with no drug-related adverse events, the report said.

Separately, the Independent newspaper reported that experts think the men may have been given too high a dose of the new drug. But the testing company said it administered the appropriate dosage based on the protocols of the sponsor and approval by the ethics committee and the regulatory authority.
