Adventrix: Thiovir Fights Bird Flu in Lab

Posted on: Monday, 20 March 2006, 15:00 CST

Adventrx said Monday its anti-viral Thiovir appears effective against chimeric strains of avian flu virus H5N1.

The company said that in preclinical studies, Thiovir worked against a chimeric avian/human influenza virus as well as influenza type A.

Adventrx said it tested its drug against a research-adapted H5N1 strain based on influenza A/Vietnam/1203/04 -- one of the deadly bird flu virus strains that is lethal in both humans and poultry -- and Ann Arbor/6/60. The firm said it would do more studies of Thiovir to assess its effectiveness against multiple H5N1 strains in both lab and in vivo trials.

We are encouraged by the results from two independent labs confirming Thiovir activity against multiple influenza viruses, said Adventrx President and Chief Executive Officer Evan Levine. We will continue to investigate Thiovir as a therapy for influenza viruses, including bird flu, and we look forward to announcing additional results, he said.

The company said it would present results from its preclinical studies of Thiovir at the 14th International Symposium on HIV and Emerging Infectious Diseases program in June in Toulon, France.
