Czech Republic to Get New Medical and Biotech Research Base

Researchers at the Czech Republic's International Clinical Research Center and the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota have partnered to introduce a clinical-and-research educational center that they claim will strengthen European-US R&D efforts.
The International Clinical Research Center (ICRC) Brno, Czech Republic project was approved by the government of the Czech Republic on March 8, 2006 with a commitment of $60 million. An additional $20 million in funding is to be provided by St Anne's Hospital, by the City of Brno and by the county.
The new research cluster is expected to strengthen Euro-US collaboration in medical research and education - particularly in the areas of cardio- and neuro-vascular diseases, internal medicine, neurology and oncology.
ICRC Brno will be located at St Anne's University Hospital. Some research-related projects will be conducted at Masaryk University's Campus Bohunice and Cardiovascular Animal Research Center located at the School of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacology.
"The relationship will focus on collaborative studies conducted between Mayo Clinic and scientists in the Czech Republic," said Dr Virend Somers, a consultant cardiologist and professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic. "At this time we already have an informal program that allows Czech physicians and engineers to train at our laboratory facilities. We look forward to a broader and even more productive cooperation with our colleagues in Brno."
In addition to providing thorough diagnosis and treating complex medical problems in every specialty, Mayo also offers medical and graduate research education, residencies and fellowships, health-care career programs and continuing education - and Czech researchers who trained at Mayo Clinic will use their experience to develop a model to introduce a new type of clinical research base to Brno.
ICRC Brno is in part the brainchild of CzechInvest, an agency of the Czech Republic's Ministry of Industry & Trade. The multifunctional center will include next-generation clinical research facilities, a state-of-the-art cardiovascular clinical center, international educational center and a technology cluster.
