Dan Cohen Tapped to Lead Advocacy Efforts for US Oncology, One of the Nation's Largest Cancer Treatment and Research Networks

Posted on: Tuesday, 28 March 2006, 09:01 CST

WASHINGTON, March 28 /U.S. Newswire/ -- US Oncology, one of the nation's largest health services networks dedicated exclusively to cancer treatment and research, today welcomed Dan Cohen -- a respected healthcare policy expert who will champion the company's advocacy efforts for its nationwide network of affiliated community- based cancer centers.

A Washington veteran and an authority on politics, health policy and government affairs, Cohen comes to US Oncology with more than 25 years experience in working with regulatory agencies and congressional offices and committees on issues ranging from healthcare to public policy. Most recently, Cohen led global corporate and public affairs, government and investor relations for the medical device manufacturing company, Inamed Corporation.

"Today there is neither a greater success story nor issue of greater importance than cancer care, which touches the lives of nearly every American," Cohen said. "Winning America's war on cancer isn't solely the duty of doctors and researchers; it's also a fundamental responsibility of our elected officials who can advance, or inhibit, cancer treatment through sound policies and appropriate funding to ensure access for quality care. I look forward to working closely with the cancer community, and with policymakers, to ensure cancer care receives the attention and deference it merits," he added.

Cohen's tenure with US Oncology comes in conjunction with the opening of a new government affairs office in Washington, which he will lead. Establishment of the office will give US Oncology a full- time Washington, D.C. presence and allow the company to play a more active role in the day-to-day Capitol Hill actives and regulatory policy development in key agencies that are critical to national cancer policy.

"We are extremely honored and fortunate to have someone of Dan's impressive background representing our network of physicians, patients and practices in Washington, D.C.," said Lloyd K. Everson, M.D., US Oncology Chairman. "As we face a rapidly aging population coupled with severe challenges facing our health care system, having someone intimately familiar with the inside-the-beltway regulatory and legislative environment is key to our ability to best serve cancer care."

Prior to his position at Inamed, Cohen served for nine years as Principal with Loeffler Jonas & Tuggey, LLP, a full service government affairs law firm, where he represented several major U.S. and international clients. He served as senior legislative liaison for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) from 1986 to 1993. He previously served as the initial managing director of Empower America, the organization founded by former Congressmen Vin Weber and Jack Kemp and former Cabinet Secretarys William Bennett and Jeane Kirkpatrick, and he was appointed as an alternate delegate of the United States to the United Nations.

Prior to his private sector work, Dan served in several senior staff positions for members of the House of Representatives. He has worked at all levels of political campaign management including the 1980 presidential bid of former Sen. Robert Dole (R-Kansas) and the successful Senate bid of Finance Committee Chairman Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa).
