Mar. 30--Reg Green, author of "The Nicholas Effect" about the 1994 death of his son and the donation of his organs and corneas to seven people, will speak Monday at Presbyterian Hospital and Carolinas Medical Center in observance of National Donate Life Month.
The first talk, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., is open to the public at Presbyterian's auditorium, 200 Hawthorne Ave. The second talk is for CMC staff only.
Nicholas Green was 7 when he was killed by highway robbers while on vacation with his parents in Italy. The California couple's decision to donate their son's organs became a major news story around the world and resulted in a doubling of organ donation rates in Italy.
Green and his wife, Maggie, have met all of the Italians who received Nicholas' organs.
They include a mother who had never seen her baby's face clearly, a diabetic who had been repeatedly in comas, a boy of 15 who was wasting away with a heart disease and a 19-year-old who was dying on the night Nicholas was but now is married with two children, one of whom is named Nicholas.
Those interested in attending the Presbyterian talk should call (704) 384-2273. Make reservations by Friday to receive a free boxed lunch. Green's visit is sponsored by LifeShare of the Carolinas, the Charlotte region's organ procurement agency.
