Posted on: Friday, 31 March 2006, 18:00 CST

WASHINGTON, March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is being issued by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services:

WHO: HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt WHEN: Tuesday, April 4, 2006 Secretary Leavitt arrives at 11:00 a.m. Note: Media should arrive by 10:45 a.m. WHERE: Central Illinois Area Agency on Aging 700 Hamilton Boulevard Peoria, IA (309) 674-2071 CONTACT: HHS Press Office (202) 690-6343 BACKGROUND:

Starting in January, prescription drug coverage is available to all Americans with Medicare. Every person with Medicare -- no matter how they get their health care today or whether they have existing drug coverage -- is eligible for drug coverage under a Medicare prescription drug plan. The drug plans are available in all parts of the country, and cover brand name and generic drugs. Prescriptions can be obtained from neighborhood pharmacies and through mail order. More than 27 million Medicare beneficiaries have signed up for this new benefit so far.

All Medicare beneficiaries have a choice of plans, so they can get the coverage that best meets their needs. They will need to make a decision about signing up for Medicare's new prescription drug coverage by May 15th -- and President Bush has launched a nationwide outreach effort to help them to make an informed decision.

Enrollment continues through May 15, 2006.
