Posted on: Monday, 3 April 2006, 12:00 CDT

CHICAGO, April 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The Young Women's Leadership Charter School of Chicago announced today that Jeanine Jiganti has been elected to the board of directors.

Jiganti is chief compliance officer of Takeda Pharmaceuticals North America, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of the largest pharmaceutical company in Japan, Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited. She has twenty years of experience in both the public and private sector drafting legislation, conducting programs that significantly improved business operations and advising senior management on regulatory, ethical and compliance issues. Jiganti previously served as the general counsel and ethics officer for the State of Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. Previously, she was vice president of legal handling litigation and regulatory issues for a Fortune 500 company, general counsel at Near North Insurance Brokerage and a lawyer at top law firms in Chicago and New York.

The Young Women's Leadership Charter School is the only all-girls public school in Chicago. The school serves 340 girls in grades 7-12 with a college preparatory curriculum focusing on science, math and technology -- fields in which women have long been underrepresented.

"This organization is reaching out to girls at a very influential point in their lives to ensure they don't disengage from math, science or technology," said Jiganti. "Coming from a company grounded in science, innovation and diversity, I'm proud to be part of a group that prepares students to achieve academically for college and careers."

Among Chicago's neighborhood and charter high schools, YWLCS ranks number one with freshman graduating within five years and percentage of graduates enrolled in post-secondary school. One hundred percent of seniors in the YWLCS class of 2005 were accepted to college and were awarded a total of $110,000 in scholarships. To learn more about YWLCS, visit http://www.ywlcs.org/ .
