Apr. 4--Twenty-seven nonprofit healthcare groups in Miami-Dade and Broward counties were awarded a combined $3.2 million in grants by the Health Foundation of South Florida, the group announced Monday.

Among the largest grants are: $280,950 to Baptist Health South Florida, to train hospice workers in culturally-sensitive end-of-life care and $230,000 to the Nursing Shortage Consortium of South Florida, to place nursing students in hospitals for clinical experience, foundation staff said.

Forty nonprofit health organizations applied for the funding in the first of two award cycles the foundation runs each year to help improve access to healthcare for underserved and uninsured Floridians in Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe counties.

The Health Foundation of South Florida, once part of Cedars Medical Center, was founded in 1993 when the majority interest of that hospital was sold.

It has since used its endowment to award local nonprofit healthcare groups more than $53 million.
