PITTSBURGH, April 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Gateway Health Plan again earned the highest possible rating by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) for its Medicaid HMO product.
NCQA is a nationally recognized, independent organization dedicated to measuring the quality of America's managed care plans, preferred provider organizations and other health-related organizations. The accreditation was effective March 20, 2006.
In its evaluation, NCQA gave Gateway Health Plan a designation of "Excellent." It marked the fourth consecutive time that Gateway Health Plan received NCQA's highest rating.
"This NCQA rating is an independent validation of Gateway Health Plan's commitment to quality," said Michael Blackwood, President and Chief Executive Officer of Gateway Health Plan, Inc. "We are pleased that Gateway received the highest level of accreditation available from the organization that is the industry standard for assessing the quality of managed care organizations. With this rating, NCQA has reassured our members that we are keeping our promise to provide them with access to quality health care."
NCQA awards its highest accreditation status of "Excellent" to HMO plans for service and clinical quality that meets or exceeds its requirements for consumer protection and quality improvement. Its surveys involve rigorous on- site and off-site evaluations of over 60 standard and selected performance measures by a team of physicians and managed care experts, followed by an analysis by a national oversight committee of physicians. NCQA Accreditation evaluates how well a health plan manages all parts of its delivery system- physicians, hospitals, other providers and administrative services-in order to continuously improve health care for its members. NCQA's standards are set high and are intended to help HMO organizations achieve the highest level of performance possible.
Located in Pittsburgh, PA, Gateway Health Plan is a managed care plan that serves more than 254,000 Medical Assistance recipients. Established in 1992 as an alternative to Pennsylvania's Department of Public Welfare's Medical Assistance Program, Gateway Health Plan currently operates in 39 counties in Pennsylvania. In January 2006, Gateway Health Plan Medicare Assured, a Special Needs Plan for Pennsylvanians who are eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid, was launched. Gateway's mission is to provide accessible, quality health care services to its members.
