Lung Cancer Alliance Acknowledges One Year Anniversary of Peter Jennings' Lung Cancer Diagnosis

Posted on: Wednesday, 5 April 2006, 15:00 CDT

WASHINGTON, April 5 /PRNewswire/ -- One year ago today, Peter Jennings informed the world of his battle with lung cancer. The Lung Cancer Alliance wanted to take a moment to acknowledge this anniversary date, and send our heartfelt thoughts to the entire Jennings family.

"Peter Jennings left many legacies," said Laurie Fenton, President of the Lung Cancer Alliance, "but one the lung cancer community will forever be grateful for was his willingness to take such a personal situation public." Fenton continued, "His difficult announcement helped shed light on the most misunderstood and lethal of all major cancers. His bravery will ultimately help save lives."

About Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States, resulting in 30 percent of all cancer deaths and killing more people than breast, prostate, colon, liver, and kidney cancers combined. More than 60 percent of those diagnosed with the disease are former smokers or people who never smoked.

More than half of new lung cancer cases will be diagnosed at a very late stage, with a five year survival rate of only five percent. Traditional treatments for lung cancer include surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. New targeted medicines provide more options to help people live longer, but more research is needed.

About Lung Cancer Alliance

The Lung Cancer Alliance (http://www.lungcanceralliance.org/) is the only national non-profit organization solely dedicated to patient support and advocacy for people living with lung cancer and those at risk for the disease. In January 2006, LCA issued the first-ever Report Card on Lung Cancer, an assessment of progress being made in the battle against this lethal disease. The majority of grades received were failing.
