Apr. 6--Starting this summer, Geisinger Health System will open clinics offering routine medical tests and treatments in Weis Markets.
The first CareWorks Convenient Healthcare clinic will be in the Weis store in Clarks Summit that Geisinger will lease, the companies reported.
At least four other clinics are expected to open within a year, said Dean Lin, vice president of Geisinger's Community Health Services. Additional clinics are planned but not every Weis store will have one, he said.
Clinics also might be placed in Weis stores not in Geisinger's 42-county primary service area, he said.
The clinics will be open seven days a week and with no appointment necessary, Lin said. Pagers will be available so people can continue their shopping if someone is being seen when they arrive, according to the health system.
A clinic visit is expected to last 15 minutes or less and services will be available for all ages, except children younger than 1.
"Our physician-supervised, certified nurse practitioners will follow Geisinger clinical guidelines in providing care," said Dr. Glenn Steele Jr., president and chief executive officer.
Nurse practitioners are registered nurses with master's degrees licensed to treat common illnesses.
Consumers can shop for their needs, be evaluated, treated for a minor illness or screened for potential health problems that might otherwise go untreated, said Norman S. Rich, president and chief executive officer of Weis.
Treatment will be provided for minor illnesses and injuries such as bronchitis, ear infections, minor sprains and strains, flu symptoms and pinkeye, Steele said.
Also available will be cholesterol testing and other health screenings, sports and camp physicals, immunizations and laboratory tests.
Prices are expected to range from $10 to $100, with an average cost of about $55, including most laboratory testing, he said.
All costs are substantially less than fees in urgent care centers or emergency rooms, he said.
Similar clinics have been tried at other retailers, such as Target.
