Posted on: Thursday, 6 April 2006, 15:00 CDT

DETROIT, April 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation will receive three awards from the Wilmer Shields Rich Awards Program for excellence in communications during 2005. The national awards are given by the Council on Foundations and the Communications Network. They recognize outstanding communications efforts that increase public awareness of foundations and corporate giving programs. The awards will be presented at the 57th Annual Conference of the Council on Foundations in Pittsburgh on May 7.

The BCBSM Foundation has won 24 Wilmer Shields Rich Awards since 1995 (seven gold, nine silver, seven bronze and one runner-up), including this year's awards:

* Gold for "Social Responsibility," the BCBSM Foundation's 2004 Annual Report

* Silver for "BCBSM Foundation Highlights," a newsletter which focused on patient safety and was published last fall

* Bronze for the http://www.bcbsm.com/foundation Web site, which provided basic information about the BCBSM Foundation, funding criteria, grants available, guidelines for submitting letters of interest, lists of published research findings, an online edition of the "Highlights" newsletter and links to other resources

"Good communication plays a key part in fulfilling our social mission," said Ira Strumwasser, executive director and CEO of the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation. "We aim to provide Michigan's health community and the general public with clear and essential information about our program goals and the projects we support. This makes it possible for us to support research and community health programs that ensure we'll get the most value from our grant funding."

The Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation is dedicated to improving the health of Michigan residents through the support of research and innovative health programs. BCBSM Foundation grant programs are conducted in Michigan by Michigan-based researchers and nonprofit organizations to address issues of quality and costs of care, access to care, and community health.

The BCBSM Foundation is the philanthropic affiliate of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, incorporated separately from BCBSM. The foundation is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. None of the foundation's grant-making resources comes from BCBSM customer premium payments. The foundation was funded through an endowment from Michigan physicians in 1983 and from proceeds of an earlier prescription drug lawsuit settlement.
