Running Out of Space at Research Park

Apr. 7--WHEN the biotechnology company UroCor Inc. moved into its building in what is now the Presbyterian Health Foundation Research Park in 1995, The Oklahoman was on hand to record the grand opening festivities.
"Backers of the research park ... are betting that UroCor will lead the way for a whole complex of new biotechnology companies on the 26-acre site," the story said. How right they were.
This week, foundation President Mike Anderson noted that 24 tenants have been added in the past 20 months, a remarkable expansion that brings the number of tenants to 44. That's 44 high-tech companies that provide high-paying jobs and translate into millions of dollars worth of economic impact each year to Oklahoma City. And more are on the way.
Plans are to add four buildings to the six now on the campus, which is located on Lincoln Boulevard, south of the state Capitol. Anderson said the foundation also has bought land nearby to allow for further expansion once the 10th building has been completed.
The newest tenant is Charlesson LLC and its subsidiary, Lifetrees LLC. The companies were formed by University of Oklahoma researcher Dr. Jian-Xing Ma and will be housed in the same building where Novazyme Pharmaceuticals began. Novazyme was bought by Genzyme Corp. in 2001 for $229 million; Genzyme has its Oklahoma City labs there.
Mike Moradi, a partner in Jian-Xing's companies, noted that "a lot of big success stories and serial entrepreneurs are located there, and we're happy to be part of that."
This week's news is further proof of how the city and state's biotech and research community continues to flourish. Lawmakers who spend their days just up the street from this hub of activity should take notice as they decide how to spend the state's money not just next year, but in years to come.
