Largest National Conference on Community-Based Mental Health and Addictions Treatment Comes to Orlando

ROCKVILLE, Md., April 7 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is being issued by the National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare:

--WHAT--

The National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare will hold its 36th Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida. Nearly 1,500 leaders and staff from community-based mental health and addictions treatment agencies across the nation will gather to examine the state of the U.S. public mental health system and define its future. Attendees include executives, administrators, psychiatrists and clinicians from community behavioral health provider organizations.

Conference sessions will cover a broad range of issues in mental health and addictions -- new treatment trends, current research and real-world applications, infrastructure needs for the public mental health system, public funding, workforce training and compensation issues, regulatory compliance and more.

--SESSION HIGHLIGHTS-- * Representatives from Florida-based mental health agencies and the justice department will present a workshop on effective collaboration between the criminal justice and mental health system to divert offenders with mental illnesses from jails to proper treatment and support through community-based care. Monday, April 10, 3:30 pm. * Herbert Meltzer, MD, winner of the American Psychiatric Association's 2005 research award for his work on schizophrenia, will lead a workshop on the implications of the recently released CATIE studies on the effectiveness of various antipsychotic drugs in treating schizophrenia. Monday, April 10, 10:30 am. * Dr. Jurgen Unutzer, MD, leader of the IMPACT depression treatment clinical trials, will conduct a workshop on effective depression treatment through a planned collaborative effort between primary care and behavioral health providers. Monday, April 10, 9:00 am * Robert Cooper, PhD, named the "ultimate business guru for the new millennium" by USA Today, will present the opening conference plenary on "Leading in a Changing World." Sunday, April 9, 8:30 am. * Richard Nakamura, PhD, Deputy Director of the National Institute of Mental Health, will talk about how the science of human behavior is being revolutionized by genetics, molecular biology and neuroscience and how these disciplines interact with traditional psychiatry and psychology. Monday, April 10, 2:00 pm. * Mary Jane England, MD, chair of the Institute of Medicine's Crossing the Quality Chasm committee, will present a plenary on how America's healthcare system can only be improved when adequate attention is given to the problems of mental illness and addictions disorders.
