California Regional Health Information Organization (CalRHIO) Recommends Data Standards for Health Information Exchange

Posted on: Friday, 7 April 2006, 18:00 CDT

SAN FRANCISCO, April 7 /PRNewswire/ -- The California Regional Health Information Organization, CalRHIO (calrhio.org), today released a list of recommended data standards aimed at helping health care organizations across the state easily share and use vital patient information.

Called a data standards roadmap, it provides a guide for California health care organizations as they purchase new or upgrade current health information technology. It is also intended to assist health IT vendors in upgrading and developing products. The roadmap illustrates the current data standard in use and the standard expected to be in use by 2010 and beyond. Nine areas are addressed: administration and finance, allergies, clinical documentation, imaging, immunization, laboratory, medication, services, and vocabulary.

"While it will take many years for all data users, providers, and vendors to adopt the recommended standards, the roadmap is intended to help organizations travel in the same direction," said Ann Donovan, CalRHIO director of projects. She noted that the list aligns with national efforts underway by the Office of the National Coordinator and others.

"Publishing the data standards is an important step toward achieving interoperability across the state," said Lori Hack, interim CEO of CalRHIO. "The recommendations will be updated as new agreements evolve from national and CalRHIO efforts."

The data standards roadmap was approved by CalRHIO's Technology Working Group, whose members represent health care related organizations across the state.

California Regional Health Information Organization (CalRHIO) is a non-profit, collaborative, statewide initiative to enable physicians, hospitals, and patients to securely access vital health information electronically. RHIOs are a major component of President Bush's plan to implement a national health information network and electronic medical records for all Americans within 10 years.
