Dell to Enhance Personal Health Records for U.S. Employees With Capability to Import Claims Information

Dell (NASDAQ:DELL) today announced that it soon will be one of the largest employers offering its U.S. workforce personal health records that regularly import pharmacy and medical claim information, resulting in easy online access to up-to-date health histories.

Later this spring, Dell's U.S. employees will receive customized invitations explaining the simple and secure process of developing their personal health record. The tool was developed in collaboration with WebMD. Dell has offered personal health records to its employees since 2004, but the new claims-import capability makes those records more powerful through automatic and secure import of medical claims information. The voluntary tool enables employees to securely track and manage their data on procedures, conditions and medications from multiple sources, including doctors, hospitals, pharmacies, and other health care providers.

Dell CEO Kevin Rollins made the announcement today during a health care forum in Nashville. The forum, co-sponsored by Dell, is the latest in a series of company efforts to highlight the potential for health care information technology. Government and industry officials came together at the event to discuss ways to lower costs and improve service quality by implementing information technology best practices, including offering personal health records.

"We work closely with our health care industry customers and policymakers to demonstrate how health care information technology can create value, improve productivity and drive efficiencies," Rollins said. "As part of this ongoing initiative, we're providing access to technology to our own employees that can help improve health and wellness while saving them time and money."

"The rise in consumer-directed health care means that Americans will need information and tools that help them make more informed medical and financial decisions," said Wayne Gattinella, president and CEO, WebMD. "We are pleased to collaborate with Dell on their leadership initiatives to provide employees with access to personal health histories online."

Dell's development of employee personal health records is the latest step in an effort to provide its employees with high-quality health services and competitive benefits. The effort, called "Well at Dell," also includes customized health improvement programs, incentives for taking action to stay healthy, and tools to empower employees to be informed health care consumers.

In October 2005, Rollins joined members of the Technology CEO Council in the regional release of "A Healthy System," a comprehensive call to action on health care information technology. Chief among the report's recommendations is to urge business leaders to do their share to improve health care, specifically by providing their employees with access to personal health records.
