National Business Group on Health Forms National Leadership Committee on Consumer-Directed Health Care

WASHINGTON, April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- With employer interest in health care consumerism at an all-time high, the National Business Group on Health announced today it has created a National Leadership Committee on Consumer- Directed Health Care. Committee members will study and recommend ways employers can advance consumerism and support the development and evolution of consumer-directed health plans. Employers are embracing these plans to put the consumer in charge of their family's health care, control rising health care costs and help workers and their families use health services more wisely.
"The number of employers offering consumer-directed health plans has risen sharply over the past couple of years, and we don't see any slowdown in the near future," said Helen Darling, president of the National Business Group on Health. "Many employers view an active, empowered consumer and consumer- directed health plans as the most promising opportunities to increase employees' involvement in their own health care decision making and help control rising costs."
The committee is comprised of human resources and employee benefits executives at large employers. It has identified several objectives, including:
1) Create a dialog among corporate leaders to enable the development, evaluation and improvement of CDH plans for employers looking to build consumerism into their health plans;
2) Identify and share experiences, best practices and innovative solutions to health care costs and quality problems using tools and methods with a consumer-focus;
3) Provide insight, information and solutions to suppliers, vendors and policymakers for the effective design and administration of current and evolving CDH plans and health accounts;
4) Encourage and support analysis of CDH plans;
5) Become a central, trusted source for reliable information, research and experience on CDH plans;
6) Promote effective public policies.
Corporate committee members include: American Express, Dell Inc., Fidelity Investments, General Mills, PepsiCo, Pitney Bowes, Quest Diagnostics, Raytheon Company, and Time Warner.
