Sicel Cleared for Radiation-Dose Tracker

Posted on: Wednesday, 12 April 2006, 12:00 CDT

Sicel Technologies said it is cleared to market a first-of-its-kind implantable radiation sensor for use in treating cancer.

The new wireless Dose Verification System is used to help physicians determine the actual doses of radiation delivered to a tumor after each course of therapy.

Sicel said it tested the new device in a multi-center clinical trial of breast-cancer patients, the majority of whom were implanted with two of the sensors before undergoing radiation therapy.

The company said the study did not turn up any adverse events linked to the DVS sensor.

We believe DVS represents breakthrough technology that provides significant benefit both to the patient as well as to the oncologist treating the patient, said Sicel President and Chief Executive Officer Michael Riddle. The Company is in the process of completing manufacturing up fit for the device and anticipates beginning to take orders and ship product in the third quarter.
