Biotech Firm Alltech to Announce New Animal-Nutrition Research Center

Posted on: Wednesday, 12 April 2006, 18:00 CDT

By Greg Kocher, The Lexington Herald-Leader, Ky.

Apr. 12--Alltech Inc., a biotechnology company headquartered in Nicholasville, is expected to announce today details regarding its new Center for Animal Nutrigenomics and Applied Animal Nutrition.

The center is thought to be the first of its kind in the world for livestock. Gov. Ernie Fletcher is scheduled to be in Nicholasville to make the announcement.

Nutrigenomics, or nutritional genomics, is the study of how certain genes respond to diet. Alltech, which makes all-natural feed supplements for livestock and pets, is delving into nutrigenomics research to see how nutrition can affect gene expression in animals.

Using DNA chips that contain the genetic code of an animal, researchers can measure the effects of certain nutritional supplements and how they alter a gene's instructions to the body.

Based on those "expression profiles," nutrients and nutritional strategies can be designed. The possibilities include, for example, designing nutrients that might result in sows giving birth to more piglets.
