MedPanel Launches Profiles in Pancreatic Cancer - United States & Europe

Posted on: Thursday, 13 April 2006, 12:00 CDT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., April 13 /PRNewswire/ -- MedPanel, a leader in online medical market intelligence, announces the launch of Profiles in Pancreatic Cancer - United States & Europe, the third release in its 2005-2006 Profiles in Oncology series. Profiles is a subscription service delivering four highly detailed, cancer-specific studies on a quarterly basis. Profiles studies evaluate clinical and commercial market opportunities for both current and emerging oncology products. Profiles is designed to provide in-depth analysis for organizations and companies considering the development, acquisition or launch of a novel therapeutic agent. The studies explore best practices, key outcomes measures, unmet medical needs, and future direction of treatment for a given indication while quantifying the trade-offs associated with varying levels of clinical performance on an agent-specific basis. The latest study offers analysis of treatment of the advanced and metastatic patient population.

According to American Cancer Society's Cancer Facts and Figures, there are approximately 30,000 new cases of pancreatic cancer each year. The annual incidence rate almost equates the annual mortality rate, manifesting the short survival time associated with pancreatic cancer. Because the disease is usually diagnosed at an advanced stage, the majority of patients survive less than one year. In the United States, according to SEER (Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results) data, the five-year survival associated with the cancer is less than 4 percent. On a stage for stage basis, cancer of the pancreas is linked with the shortest median survival time out of all cancer types.

In the EU, data from the WHO (World Health Organization) database presents an estimated 0.01 percent annual incidence rate. Extrapolation from the incidence data results in roughly 6,700 annual cases in the UK and France, 9,100 in Germany, 6,400 in Italy, and 4,400 in Spain. As in the US, these figures approximate the annual reported mortality rate reported. Unfortunately, there has been little change in overall pancreatic cancer incidence or mortality rates in both regions over the recent decades. These dismal statistics highlight the need for enhanced diagnostic techniques and improved therapeutic strategies for the cancer type.

"Profiles in Pancreatic Cancer is an indispensable tool for drug developers in their efforts to fulfill the significant unmet need in this tumor type," said Priya Bhargava, Vice President of Content Development at MedPanel. "The combination of current market assessment with future landscape analysis provides the foundation necessary for successful product development. Clinical profile evaluation and competitive intelligence on investigational agents are just some of the insights Profiles provides."

Dr. Nina Karlin, of UCLA, said, "MedPanel offers the ideal platform for discussion of novel approaches to treating pancreatic cancer. Such an approach stimulates fruitful interaction among community and academic oncologists and is critical for the dissemination of recent advances and burgeoning research."
