H. Pylori May Be Linked to Heart Disease

Researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham are investigating a link between common stomach bacteria and heart disease among African-Americans.
The bacteria H. pylori is found in the lining of the stomach and is known to cause ulcers and cancer, but it may also be linked to other diseases, said study leader Mohammad A. Khaled, professor of nutrition sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
H. pylori causes inflammation, which can contribute to other diseases, said Khaled.
Nearly half of all African-Americans are infected with the bacteria -- a much higher percentage than in Caucasians in the United States.
