African American Women Bear Unequal Burden for Deadly Disease

NEW YORK, April 19 /PRNewswire/ -- THIS IS A HEALTH NEWS UPDATE. COMPARED TO ANY GENDER, RACE, OR ETHNICITY, AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN HAVE THE GREATEST RISK OF DYING FROM COLORECTAL CANCER. A RECENT HARRIS POLL REVEALED THAT NINETY-SIX PERCENT OF AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN OVER AGE FORTY-FIVE DO NOT CONSIDER THEMSELVES TO BE AT HIGH RISK FOR THE DISEASE.
IN RESPONSE, THE BLACK WOMEN'S HEALTH IMPERATIVE AND THE NATIONAL WOMEN'S HEALTH RESOURCE CENTER ARE CHALLENGING AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN TO DARE TO BE AWARE OF THEIR COLORECTAL CANCER RISK AND TAKE ACTION.
DR. EDITH MITCHELL, GASTROINTESTINAL ONCOLOGIST AT THOMAS JEFFERSON UNIVERSITY:
"Colorectal cancer does not have to be a death sentence. If screening reveals a tumor, there are many viable options for therapy that could include surgery, radiation, targeted therapies, chemotherapy and oral chemotherapy, which may help some patients continue to work or spend time with family and friends. We strongly encourage African American women to confront their risk for colon and rectal cancer, get the facts and take action!"
