JOHNSTOWN, Pa., April 20 /PRNewswire/ -- The World Health Organization (WHO) has named Memorial Medical Center as the first Health-Promoting Hospital (HPH) in the United States. The WHO's health-promotion organization is dedicated to improve equity in health, reduce health risks and promote healthy lifestyles and environments.
Dr. Matt Masiello, a Vice President of the Conemaugh Health System and the Director of Conemaugh Health System's Office of Community Health, recently attended a WHO conference in Denmark, where the news of Memorial Medical Center's designation was announced. "I think it's tremendous that we're being recognized by the international community for the great strides we're making in health prevention and promotion with efforts such as our injury prevention, KidShape and Healthy Lifestyles programs in addition to the Tobacco-Free Campus initiative," says Dr. Masiello.
In 1998, Dr. Masiello spearheaded the creation of the Child/Adolescent Health & Wellness Council of Cambria County, which was formed as a community component of the Department of Pediatrics at Memorial Medical Center. In 2003, Conemaugh Health System established the Office of Community Health.
These two entities work closely with state and local health care providers and agencies to evaluate both children and adults in the community, develop programs based on their needs and evaluate the outcomes of these programs.
The Office of Community Health also collaborates with local businesses to develop and implement health promotion and disease prevention programs for the entire community.
