Business Coalition Says It's Bad Business: Proposed Health Care Legislation in New York State

Posted on: Friday, 21 April 2006, 12:00 CDT

NEW YORK, April 21 /PRNewswire/ -- STORY SUMMARY:

Story Information: THIS IS A MULTIVU SPECIAL REPORT. NEW YORK STATE BUSINESSES ARE LINING UP TO OPPOSE STATE LEGISLATION THAT WOULD FORCE EMPLOYERS WITH AS FEW AS 100 EMPLOYEES TO SPEND FIXED AMOUNTS OF THEIR WAGES ON HEALTH CARE.

MARYLAND PASSED A LAW MANDATING LARGE EMPLOYERS EXPAND HEALTH COVERAGE, BUT THE LEGISLATION HAS BEEN REJECTED IN AT LEAST 10 OTHER STATES. ELLIOTT SHAW, SPOKESPERSON FOR THE BUSINESS COUNCIL OF NEW YORK STATE SAYS THE LEGISLATION CREATES A HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT FOR EMPLOYERS.

"New York's business climate is fragile, instead of passing legislation to make our state more competitive, governments should collaborate with the business community on sensible, creative solutions for New York's healthcare problems."

MANY BUSINESSES ARE WORKING TO ADDRESS THE HEALTH CARE ISSUE. FOR EXAMPLE, WAL-MART STORES -- THE NATION'S LARGEST EMPLOYER -- HAS JUST ANNOUNCED NEW HEALTH CARE INSURANCE FEATURING $11 PREMIUMS AND, IN ADDITION, HEALTH BENEFITS FOR CHILDREN OF ELIGIBLE PART-TIME EMPLOYEES.

WAL-MART ALSO HAS PLANS TO EXPAND ITS IN-STORE HEALTH CARE CLINICS TO 50 WAL-MART STORES NATIONWIDE THIS YEAR ALONE. I'M SUSAN KELLEHER.
