First University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Patent Holders Honored

Apr. 21--A plant some American Indians used in healing has led to the first patent holders at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Chemistry professor Aaron Monte, microbiology professor Marc Rott and former student Leah DeFoe filed their patent in November for discovering anti-infective agents in a plant used by Ojibwa.

The trio were honored Thursday by U.S. Rep. Ron Kind and presented with the 2005-06 Innovation Scholar Award from the WiSys Technology Foundation Inc., which was founded in 2000 to support research and educational programs at UW schools.

In researching the plant, they discovered a previously unknown molecule that kills bacteria responsible for anthrax, tuberculosis and other infectious diseases. It took six to seven years to isolate the molecule and figure out what it does.

With the patent approved, they have about 10 years to develop a drug for the market.

"This patent and award is not the end game for us, but is an exciting beginning," Monte said.

Monte and Rott are founding members of Mycophyte Discovery LCC, a company they started last summer with microbiology professor William Schwan and biology professor Thomas Volk.
