OAKLAND, Calif., May 1 /PRNewswire/ -- May 1st kicks off the beginning of National Bike Month, and here in the San Francisco Bay Area, many are gearing up for the region's 12th annual Bike to Work Day, a celebration set for Thursday, May 18 that promotes bicycling as a healthy, fun, and viable form of transportation.
With gas prices at an all time high and expected to creep even higher during the summer, many Bay Area residents are looking to bicycling as an alternative form of transportation. Cole Portocarrero, the event coordinator for Bike to Work Day, says, "In addition to creating a healthy lifestyle and providing a way to get outdoors, bike commuting saves money." Event organizers are emphasizing several Bay Area activities:
-- The Team Bike Challenge: There are more than 25 teams signed up to participate in the new Team Bike Challenge. Starting May 1st, participants will track their transportation trips made by bicycle and compete against other teams to earn the most commute points. Each team includes five participants, two of whom must be "novice" bike commuters. Some teams include an elected official or company CEOs. Go to the Team Bike Challenge pages, under the Bicycling menu, on 511.org to sign up or follow the teams' progress. -- Bike to Work Day is Thursday, May 18 -- Register Today: On the morning of May 18, over 150 Energizer Stations will be located along local bike commute routes in all nine Bay Area counties to provide free beverages, snacks, and encouragement to bicyclists. Organizers expect up to 100,000 participants. Register today at 511.org. -- Bike Commuter of the Year: One person in each county has been recognized by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission as a "Bike Commuter of the Year." Read their stories on the Bike to Work Day pages at 511.org. -- Local Events All Month Long: Dozens of events during the month of May will get people excited about bicycling and the benefits it provides for public health, traffic reduction, and our environment. Go to the Bike To Work Day pages at 511.org for details about Bay Area events.
