May 3--New Jersey's recently approved smoking ban is having a beneficial side effect -- encouraging smokers to quit.
Increasingly, smokers are turning to state-funded quit centers for help in kicking the habit. At one, the number of inquiries doubled in just one month.
Experts say the inconvenience of going outside for a cigarette drives some people to quit or cut back. Also, the absence of secondhand smoke in bars and restaurants helps eliminate temptation.
Other states that have imposed smoking bans have had a similar experience.
