Staffing Shortage Puts ASH Workers at Risk, Investigators Say: Justice Department Probe Reveals Inadequacies

May 5--Shortfalls in psychiatric and medical care at Atascadero State Hospital continue to put patients and workers in the mental health facility at risk, Justice Department investigators said.
In a scathing report written May 2, the team pointed out far-reaching deficiencies in services throughout ASH. Among the shortfalls were what the experts called inadequate methods for assessing and planning for the mental health needs of the hospital's 1,300 or so patients.
These deficits, they wrote, do little to correct potentially damaging behavior before patients are released.
