University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Las Vegas Hospital Venture Hits Bump

Posted on: Saturday, 13 May 2006, 00:00 CDT

By Christopher Snowbeck, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

May 13--Talks about the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center operating a hospital in Las Vegas are on hold, a spokeswoman said yesterday.

The chancellor of the Nevada System of Higher Education and the University of Nevada School of Medicine told UPMC in January that they were planning a comprehensive study of Nevada's future health sciences needs, UPMC spokeswoman Wendy Zellner said.

"We were advised that pending the completion of that study, the academic medical center project would be put on hold," she said.

"Once they decide how they wish to proceed, we will evaluate whether this is something that is of mutual benefit and interest."

The prospect of UPMC operating a medical center in Las Vegas first surfaced in March 2005. Las Vegas is one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, yet it lacks an academic medical center. UPMC was eyed as a potential partner on the project after talks fell through with the Cleveland Clinic.

But the plan soon hit stumbling blocks. Last summer, physicians in the Las Vegas area questioned why outside expertise was needed in creating a new academic medical center, and UPMC rejected a suggestion that the health system contribute $150 million to the project.
