May 13--STAMFORD -- Police arrested a city woman Wednesday who was dealing drugs and stashing counterfeit money in her elderly mother's South End apartment, investigators said this week.
Police had been watching Carolyn Baker, 40, who lists addresses at 10 Cedar St. and 50 Maple Ave., for more than a month, said Lt. Jon Fontneau, commander of the department's narcotics and organized crime units.
Customers came to her mother's apartment on Cedar Street to buy small amounts of cocaine and crack -- usually worth about $20, Fontneau said.
Her mother, who is about 70, said she knew nothing about her daughter's drug dealing, Fontneau said.
Baker also would sell out of her car in the South End and make hand deliveries for some customers there, Fontneau said.
Police found Baker and her boyfriend in the Maple Avenue apartment, Fontneau said. A search turned up a small amount of marijuana and $680 in cash in a dresser drawer, police said.
Officers found Baker's main stash in her mother's Cedar Street apartment, Fontneau said.
Her mother was home and watched as officers searched her home, police said.
One officer reached inside a pillow with a small hole in it and pulled out 17 wrapped packages of crack cocaine, 10 small bags of marijuana and a few loose crack rocks, Fontneau said.
Officers found about $435 of counterfeit cash underneath a chair cushion, he said. Fontneau did not say how Baker got the money or how it was made but said investigators would try to trace it.
Police charged Baker with possession of narcotics, possession of marijuana, possession of narcotics with intent to sell and possession of marijuana with intent to sell, investigators said.
They held Baker on $15,000 bond for a scheduled appearance in state Superior Court in Stamford on May 24, police said.
