Girl Found Unharmed After Carjacking

May 15--HARLINGEN -- A 7-year-old girl was found unharmed late Sunday in Harlingen after her family's minivan was carjacked in Weslaco.

The father, who could only be identified at press time as having the last name of Cardenas, had stepped out of his minivan at the H-E-B supermarket on North Texas Boulevard at about 8:35 p.m. in Weslaco to buy a soft drink from a machine, said Weslaco Police Officer David Molina.

While the father was at the vending machine, a man jumped into the minivan, with its engine running, and drove away with the girl in the car, Molina said. The father called 911 after his car and daughter were taken, Molina said.

Harlingen police later found the minivan at 2221 N. 77 Sunshine Strip (Business 77), next to Cano Produce Co., with the girl in the car. The alleged carjacker had already fled the scene, Molina said.

Police are looking for a white male in his early 20s with brown hair and blue eyes, wearing a blue shirt with white stripes and blue jeans, Molina said.

Weslaco police took the father to Harlingen to retrieve his daughter and returned them to Weslaco, Molina said. They planned to tow the minivan back to Weslaco to process it for evidence, he said.
