Introducing the First Online Medical Records Provider Developed From the Practitioner's Standpoint

Posted on: Monday, 15 May 2006, 15:08 CDT

DES PLAINES, Ill., May 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Doctors and patients now have access to a simpler, more efficient way to store and locate important medical records, with the first online medical records provider developed from the practitioner's standpoint: YourMedChart.com.

Unlike other online medical archives where patients input their own data, YourMedChart.com includes only official records, reports, and images from healthcare providers and physicians. No patient-edited or narrated information will be included, except for allergy and medication information. So rather than surfing through information patients have included - some relevant and some that may not be - physicians can quickly locate their patient's relevant records, saving time and potentially thousands of dollars in added cost to the patient.

Company founders Rachna Dave and Sapan Shah came up with the concept for YourMedChart.com during medical school at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, after observing numerous physicians piecing together patients' incomplete medical records, or having to retest patients due to missing records.

"During medical school, we observed firsthand the delays in treatment and repeat testing that can occur when medical records are incomplete," said Dave, president and founder of YourMedChart.com. "Our mission is to reduce this confusion by making this important - and sometimes lifesaving - information available to physicians, organized as it is used in clinical practice."

All of the information archived on YourMedChart.com is input by the company's team of medical professionals, who upload patient information in the same format physicians use. For many physicians reviewing a record on YourMedChart.com, the format would be similar to a local electronic medical record system that might be available at their institution.

How It Works

Patients subscribe to YourMedChart.com via the Web site, and then ask their physician(s) to send in their medical records via mail, e-mail or fax. YourMedChart.com can accept electronic documents and paper documents, as well as X-Ray, MRI and CT films. Once received, a team of physicians and health care professionals organize and upload the reports and images into classifications that are commonly used in medical practice, which makes the patient's online records more useful to physicians. Patients choose which physicians are authorized to access their records, and provide them with a secure password. Patients can access their own records at any time using a secure login.

A subscription to YourMedChart.com is $7.50 a month, with a $14.95 setup fee. Currently, YourMedChart.com is offering the first three months free upon signing up. The company also offers free subscriptions to senior citizens with economic hardships. Patients can cancel at any time.

Why Online Medical Records?

According to a recent study by the RAND Corporation, if 90 percent of doctors and hospitals adopt an electronic medical records system, Americans could save more than $77 billion annually in health care costs. That's because when old records are not available, patients incur increased medical costs due to prolonged hospital stays and extensive repeat testing. YourMedChart.com was developed to help reduce this confusion by serving as an easily accessible system for storing patients' medical records.

About YourMedChart.com

YourMedChart.com was founded in late 2005 by medical students Rachna Dave and Sapan Shah, after experiencing firsthand the challenges with fragmented health records during medical school at Case Western Reserve University.

Based in Des Plaines, Ill., the company seeks to make vital medical information portable and always available to patients and their physicians regardless of their location.

As a companion to YourMedChart.com, the company is currently working on its Practice Manager, electronic medical record software that will allow physicians to maintain records online for every patient in their practice. This service will let practitioners input patient visit notes, problem lists and medication records, let them write prescriptions electronically, and will include imaging and lab record-keeping functionalities.
