New Study: Health Insurance Bill Comes With a High Price: Up To 100 Thousand Jobs and Lower Wages

Posted on: Thursday, 18 May 2006, 15:06 CDT

NEW YORK, May 18 /PRNewswire/ -- STORY SUMMARY:

THIS IS A MULTIVU SPECIAL REPORT. LOWER WAGES ... THE LOSS OF AS MANY AS 100 THOUSAND JOBS ... A NEW EMPLOYMENT POLICIES INSTITUTE STUDY SAYS A HEALTH INSURANCE BILL PENDING IN NEW YORK STATE COULD COME WITH A HIGH PRICE. SUPPORTERS CALL IT "FAIR SHARE FOR HEALTH CARE," BUT IF IT PASSES, A RECENT STUDY SAYS NEW YORK EMPLOYERS WILL BE FORCED TO PAY MORE -- DISCOURAGING JOB GROWTH -- WITH NO GUARANTEE UNINSURED WORKERS WILL GET HEALTH BENEFITS.

ECONOMIST DR. AARON YELOWITZ IS THE AUTHOR OF THE STUDY:

"For workers who are close to the minimum wage, mandated health insurance will cost jobs, roughly 100,000 jobs will be lost due to this mandated health insurance."

THE LEGISLATION TARGETS COMPANIES WITH 100 OR MORE EMPLOYEES. BUT THE STUDY SAYS 83% OF NEW YORKERS WORKING IN THOSE COMPANIES ALREADY HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE. THE NEW YORK ASSEMBLY IS SCHEDULED TO HEAR THE BILL THIS TUESDAY. SIMILAR BILLS HAVE FAILED IN AT LEAST 20 STATES.
