Five Predictors of Bipolar Disorder

Posted on: Monday, 22 May 2006, 15:00 CDT

U.S. researchers have identified five predictors for bipolar disorder risk in patients who have been unsuccessfully treated with antidepressants.

Forty-three percent of patients who responded positively to any three risk factors screened positive for bipolar disorder using the Mood Disorder Questionnaire, according to Dr. Joseph R. Calabrese, a professor of psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University and head of the Mood Disorders Program at University Hospitals of Cleveland.

The researchers concluded that significant risk factors of bipolar disorder among patients already diagnosed with major depression were anxiety, feelings of people being unfriendly, family history of bipolar disorder, a recent diagnosis of depression and legal problems.

One hundred percent of patients with all five factors were screened positively for bipolar disorder, according to the study.

The findings are being presented monday at the 159th Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Psychiatric Association in Toronto.
